ISHS Acta Horticulturae 71: Symposium on Carnations

THE DEVELOPMENT OF FUSARIUM WILT OF CARNATION IN SOILS WITH DIFFERENT SOIL INOCULUM LEVELS, AND DISEASE CONTROL WITH CARBENDAZIM DRENCHES.

Author:   Marion H. Ebben
Abstract:
The development of Fusarium wilt symptoms in carnations grown in soils artificially infested with different amounts of inocula was recorded in four experiments in 1973–76. Initial numbers of plants with symptoms and rates of increase in disease severity were directly related to inoculum levels in each year, but differed between years. Disease increased relatively slowly until 10% of the plants showed symptoms and was then more rapid. Carbendazim drenches decreased disease severity at all inoculum levels, drenches applied soon after planting being more effective than drenches delayed until after symptoms had appeared. Only where initial inocula were low did the decrease in disease with carbendazim drenches prevent loss of flower production. Drenches applied in the 2nd year of the crop did not decrease wilt.
