Authors:   Z. Yuntao, W. Guixia, D. Jing, L. Jiajun, D. Mingqin
Keywords:   Fragaria × ananassa, cultivar description
Abstract:
Since 1990, public strawberry breeding programs have been conducted in several provinces in China: Shanghai city, Beijing city, Liaoning province, and Jiangsu province. These programs have been funded mainly by the Ministry of Agriculture. The aim has been to produce strawberries that are large, have excellent flavour and firmer flesh, on high yielding cultivars that are adapted to the different environmental conditions in China. Five resulting cultivars that were released in 1996 and 1999 are described in detail. Some recent applications of biotechnology techniques to strawberry breeding are presented.
