ISHS Acta Horticulturae 708: V International Strawberry Symposium

BREEDING ORNAMENTAL STRAWBERRIES

Authors:   G. Bentvelsen, B. Bouw
Keywords:   Annual bedding plant, flower color, seed propagation
Abstract:
Seed-propagated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cultivars are attracting increased attention from growers of ornamental plants. ABZ Seeds developed a special breeding program focusing on ornamental characteristics. Some of these characteristics are early flowering, compact plant habit and attractive flowers. The attraction of flowers to consumers is based on size, shape, number and colour. Next to flower characteristics, an ornamental strawberry cultivar should have fruit with optimal flavour. Shelf life of the fruit plays a minor role. The emphasis on flower characteristics allows the selection of two generations of strawberry breeding material in one year. To date, seven cultivars have been developed specifically for the ornamental industry.
