ISHS Acta Horticulturae 708: V International Strawberry Symposium

STRAWBERRY PRODUCTION IN SOUTH AMERICA

Authors:   M. Gambardella, R. Pertuzé
Keywords:   Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Fragaria × ananassa, cultivars, pests, diseases, plant production
Abstract:
Strawberry production in South American countries accounts for only 5% of world production (161,478 t). Strawberry production in countries such as Brazil, Chile and Argentina has increased significantly. The current state of agricultural development in these countries indicates even stronger development in the next few years, which is an issue that should be taken into account by investors in the area. Growth in production has not only increased exports of frozen strawberries, but has also increased domestic consumption. The following aspects are discussed in relation to the main growing regions: fruit production, industry development, production periods, main cultivars, and growing techniques.
