Abstract:
‘Medina’ and ‘Marina’ are two short-day cultivars released by the Spanish
national strawberry breeding programme. Since 2001, the performance of ‘Medina’ and ‘Marina’ in comparison with 10 other standard cultivars has been recorded at different locations in Huelva (the main strawberry fruit production area of Spain) for their agronomic characteristics.
Both cultivars grew vigorously and were well-adapted to growing conditions in Huelva. ‘Medina’ is a highly productive cultivar with good early production of large-sized fruits and a low percentage of second qual-ity fruit (mostly small). ‘Marina’ is less productive than ‘Medina’. However, its fruit has an excellent flavour, and is pleasantly aromatic and high in colour intensity.
These qualitative traits make ‘Marina’ appropriate for direct consumption as well as for processing.
The performance of ‘Medina’ and ‘Marina’ during the last cropping season (2003/2004) is described in the present work.
