Abstract:
Twenty isolates of Colletotrichum acutatum were collected from strawberry plants or fruit in the UK. The isolates were tested for their pathogenicity on a set of five cultivars: ‘Chandler’, ‘Dover’, ‘Elsanta’, ‘Seascape’ and ‘Valeta’. The cultivars separated into two groups, with ‘Chandler’, ‘Elsanta’ and ‘Valeta’ more susceptible than ‘Dover’ and ‘Seascape’. There were significant differences in pathogenicity among the isolates and some cultivar x isolate interactions, but these did not follow a pattern.
Using a subset of five isolates, a range of cultivars grown in northern Europe was screened for resistance, along with advanced selections from the East Malling Research breeding programme. ‘Honeoye’ and ‘Pandora’ showed a useful level of resistance, even against the most aggressive isolates.
