Abstract:
Potential Northern Vigour® response in strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) was examined with the primary objective to develop Saskatchewan as a supplier of high quality, superior yielding planting material for national and international markets. The project coordinated research between several U.S. cooperators and up to nine Canadian sites. ‘Camarosa’ crowns were mass- produced and tested in southern California regions for Northern Vigour potential. Cultural practices were also examined which would increase yield of daughter crowns. These experiments included the influence of Remay, hormonal crown dip, production cycle, and nitrogen application on subsequent yield. In the first 3 years of observation, Canadian-sourced crowns consistently expressed higher yields in the first two months of marketable fruit production. In the following 2 years, results were more variable depending upon Canadian source and U.S. location of fruit production. In the most recent fruiting years, yields from Canadian-sourced crowns were again higher than California-sourced crowns. Increasing daughter crown yield beyond 8 crowns per mother should not be a significant problem in future. Producing daughters from overwintered mother plants (granddaughters), planting bare-root field-grown crowns as early as possible in the spring (April), using Remay field cover in the first season for the first 2 months, and increasing the soil nitrogen to 200 lbs./acre, increased daughter crown numbers. In future, testing should be performed on fall-planted bare-root strawberry crowns and using registered greenhouse-grown plug plants in spring planting.
