Abstract:
Strawberry cultivars were evaluated for resistance to anthracnose fruit rot (Colletotrichum acutatum) and Botrytis fruit rot (Botrytis cinerea) in field trials at
Dover, Florida during the 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2003-04 seasons.
Fruit were evaluated for disease during a 4- to 5-week interval in February and March of each season.
The incidence of anthracnose fruit rot ranged from 2 to 75% in 2001-02, 8 to 96% in 2002-03, and 1 to 83% in 2003-04. ‘Sweet Charlie’, ‘Carmine’, and ‘Earlibrite’ were the most resistant cultivars tested; ‘Strawberry Festival’ was intermediate in susceptibil-ity; and ‘Camarosa’ and ‘Treasure’ were highly susceptible.
The incidence of Botrytis fruit rot ranged from 5 to 19% in 2001-02, 1 to 7% in 2002-03, and 17 to 39% in 2003-04. It was more difficult to separate cultivars with respect to Botrytis fruit rot resis-tance.
However, disease incidence was relatively low in ‘Camarosa’ and ‘Carmine’, and two to three times higher in ‘Sweet Charlie’ and ‘Earlibrite’.
