Abstract:
The probability of late frost damage is estimated for sweet and sour cherry orchards.
The probability of damage was calculated as the simultaneous occurrence of a susceptible phenophase and the critical temperature.
A database of phenological observations was used for bud burst, green tip, early blossom and petal fall in sweet cherry (‘Germersdorf’ cultivar) and sour cherry (‘Crisana’ cultivar) orchards for a 29 year period (1970-1976, 1982-2003) together with weather data taken from a longer period.
The probability of damage exceeded 3% in sweet cherry and 4% in sour cherry for five day periods between March 11 and April 25 in the Pitesti – Maracineni area.
To extend the applicability of these studies to areas with no phenological observations, a package of multiple regression equations was developed which could simulate the phenological dynamics until the end of bloom.
