MODELLING THE DIAMETER OF ANNUAL SHOOTS IN A THREE-YEAR-OLD FRUITING BRANCH OF PERSIAN WALNUT (JUGLANS REGIA L.)

Abstract:
In common walnut, fruits always grow on annual shoots regardless of fruit bearing habit which can be terminal, intermediate or lateral. The size and weight of fruits as well as kernel weight and kernel percentage in total weight are related to many factors. Among them, the diameter of fruiting annual shoot is one of the most important. In the present report we deal with the model of annual shoot diameter. The model has been developed by using a tree architecture analysis of one hundred free grown ten- to twelve-year-old walnut seedlings. A three year-old branch, consisting of a three-year-old shoot plus corresponding two-year-old and annual shoots, was measured as a structural unit. Five hundred fruiting branches were analyzed in total. Among 15 quantitative traits, concerning three-, two- and one-year-old wood, five of them were included into the annual shoot diameter model according to Pearson's correlation coefficients and the multiple regression analysis. The annual shoot diameter is in positive correlation with the diameter of the corresponding two-year-old shoot, with the length of annual shoot and with the number of flowering buds per annual shoot. It is in negative correlation with the length of two-year-old shoot and with the number of annual shoots per two-year-old shoot. The linear model with five parameters explains 86 % of variability.
