Abstract:
Twelve inbred lines of sprouting broccoli were assayed for to fertility index to assess their level of self-incompatibility.
Six lines, namely Calabrese Sutton, BI-80336, DPGB-5, Broccoli Green Head, BR-76018 and Palam Samridhi, were found to be highly self-incompatible.
The crosses which showed significant heterosis over the better parent were BI-80167 x Palam Samridhi for marketable head weight and marketable head weight per hectare, number of axillary heads, head diameter and head size index, EC-10356 x Calabrese Sutton for net head weight, BI-80167 x DPGB-5 for number of leaves, DPGB-5 x BR-76018 for harvest index, EC-10356 x DPGB-5 for days to 50% harvest and first harvest and BI-80167 x DPGB-5 for plant height.
On the basis of yield (marketable head weight per hectare), BI-80167 x Palam Samridhi was identified as the best F1 hybrid.
It exhibited 112.26% heterosis over the better parent and 59% over a commercial hybrid.
It showed significant heterosis for marketable head weight, net head weight, head diameter and head size index.
This hybrid could be used as an indigenous source to exploit heterosis on a commercial scale for higher yield.
