Abstract:
Ten glucosinolates (GSLs) were isolated by means of desulfate extraction from the edible parts of ‘Hanakkori’ by reversed-phase HPLC analysis, and they were identified as progoitrin, glucoraphanin, glucoalyssin, gluconapoleiferin, gluconapin, glucobrassicanapin, glucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, gluconasturtiin and neoglucobrassicin based on their retention times of HPLC and MS spectra.
The total GSL content was 104.34 and 35.80 mmol/kg dry weight (DW) for the seeds and the edible parts, respectively.
In addition, the effects of nitrogen (N) application (N 5, 10, 15 and 20 mM) on total GSL contents were investigated.
The total GSL contents ranged from 25 to 35 mmol/kg DW without any significant difference among N applications.
The major GSLs (>5% to the total GSL) in the seeds were progoitrin (76%), gluconapin (10%) and glucobrassicanapin (7%) whereas in the edible parts they were progoitrin (mean 48%), glucoalyssin (10%), glucobrassicanapin (9%) and glucobrassicin (14%). In the edible parts, progoitrin, gluconapin and glucobrassicin with high N supply might be a problem due to their bitterness.
Furthermore, glucoraphanin dramatically decreased in both 15 and 20 mM N treatments, whereas glucobrassicin increased significantly with 20 mM N treatment.
