Abstract:
This work aims at improving walnuts’ mechanical dehydration.
Traditionally, walnuts are too dry.
So in 1999, the walnut grower organization of the south-east of France applied the Walnut Experimental Station in Rhone-Alps to work on that topic in order to find a reliable, accurate and cheap measuring tool.
As a consequence, nut growers will stop their dehydrators when walnuts will be at 12% moisture content (the norm CEE ONU). Different methods were tested, the choice is to use a moisture indicator (use the electrical conductivity, traditionally used on cereals) because this type of machine is portable and easy to use.
Walnut Experimental Station in Rhône-Alpes adapted one moisture indicator for walnuts, the Sparex’s tester.
So walnut growers can read the moisture content immediately on the tester.
This work is realised with the Creysse Experimental Station who have calibrated an other tester, the Samap-O-Test and who works particularly on the drawing of walnut samples representative of the dehydrator.
