Abstract:
The wood of walnut is regarded to be as one of the most valuable wood in the world for furniture and joinery.
From the Renaissance times the walnut wood has been used for classical furniture of high quality (Vassiliou and Aidinidis, 2004).
Walnut is cultivated either as plantations or as individual trees.
The use of walnut wood from trunk, root or branches either as sawn timber or veneer for high quality furniture and joinery items is attributed to its good physical and mechanical properties, easy machining and processing, variety of colour, aesthetic figure and fine texture (Koukos, 1986; Roussodimos, 1998; Vassiliou and Aidinidis, 2004). The demand for walnut wood in the world market is great and since the availability of such wood doesn’t satisfy the demand, a number of other woods with similar properties are used as substitutes for walnut wood (Roussodimos, 1990; Vassiliou and Aidinidis, 2004) However, the true walnut wood originated from the European walnut (Juglans regia L.) and the American black walnut (Juglans nigra L.), are regarded to be as the most important and valuable wood producer trees.
Depending on the country of origin, walnut wood is known in the market as French, Italian, English, Greek, Turkish, Russian, Spanish walnut etc. (Vassiliou and Aidinidis, 2004).
