Abstract:
The development on time of several necrotic lesions on walnut fruits has been characterized in an experimental orchard of two walnut varieties (‘Chico’ and ‘Chandler’) in southern Spain.
Every 15 days from April to September during three years (2000-2003), disease symptoms were evaluated and bacterial and fungal isolations from affected fruits were made.
The type of fruit lesions were related with premature drooping and commercial quality of fruits.
The more common and important disease observed during the three years was bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis. Three different fruit lesions were associated with this disease varying mainly in the size: spot (large), mottle (medium), and dot (small). Spot was the most important and more frequently associated with fruit drooping and seed damage.
Other pathogens associated with fruit lesions were Fusarium spp.
These fungi were isolated more frequently from fruit rot at the end of each season.
