Abstract:
Among root, crown and lower trunk diseases of walnut, Phytophthora species are of importance in various parts of Iran.
The pathogen attacks root, crown and lower trunk and results in dieback, discoloration of infected tissues, production of black exudates around trunk and collapse of the trees at different ages.
The disease is called “Black Water” by the local farmers.
The disease is widespread in southern province of Iran including Fars, Kerman and Kuhgiluyeh & Boire-Ahmad provinces on Juglans regia propagated from seeds.
Several species of Phytophthora including P. cactorum, P. citricola and P. citrophthora have been isolated from symptomatic trees and soil using selective antibiotic medium and plant baits.
The reaction of several local and foreign walnut cultivars and also false walnut (Pterocarya fraxinifolia) to Phytophthora species is under investigation under greenhouse conditions.
