Abstract:
The performance of a walnut silvoarable trial established in 1986 is assessed.
German varieties grown at 10 m on the square in 2m wide crop free strips (8 m arable bed) were used.
The trees had minimal effect on the crops other than the loss of the 2m wide strips of crop land.
The site, tree management and intercropping system had a major effect on walnut yield.
A yield of 1 tonne per ha was only obtained from selected trees of varieties “139” and “286” after 10 years.
The economic impact of improving precocity is modelled.
Recommendations for further research are outlined.
