Abstract:
Growth and productivity of ‘Chandler’ trees propagated on selected J. regia seedling rootstocks were evaluated at two sites near Linden, California.
Site 1 was planted in 1989, and included ‘Chandler’ trees nursery grafted on open-pollinated seedlings of ‘Manregian’, ‘Eureka’, “Spanish”, ‘Ronde de Montignac’ and ‘Corne’. Rootstocks at site 2, planted in 1994, included seedlings of ‘Eureka’, ‘Waterloo’, ‘Chandler’, and ‘Sunland’ seedlings from a California nursery, two additional J. regia sources named ‘Russian’ and ‘Carpathian’ by their respective suppliers, and Paradox hybrid seedlings from a California source.
Growth and productivity were similar among J. regia sources trees at site 1. At site 2, Paradox-rooted trees grew larger and had greater nut production than J. regia rooted trees in most years.
