Abstract:
Top working of 25-year-old seedling walnut trees was carried out with im-proved cultivar ‘Partap’ by using three summer budding methods namely chip annu-lar, patch and veneer grafting method.
These methods were practiced simultaneously on one year old and current season’s forced shoots arising from winter dehorned stumps of main scaffold branches.
Budding and grafting methods were done from May to July as per their recommended timing for nursery propagation at this site.
The findings revealed that the chip budding during the mid May and annular budding in the 1st week of July performed on current season’s forced shoots resulted in highest success of 86.67 per cent during 2002. However during 2003, annular budding gave higher (83.00%) success than chip budding, which gave 80.00 per cent success.
Results of various budding and veneer grafting methods gave poor performance on one year old forced shoots.
Veneer grafting registered lowest success of 3.33 and 8.00 per cent on one year old forced shoots respectively during 2002 and 2003. The growth in terms of diameter and height of scion shoots was maximum in annular budded plants during both the years.
