Abstract:
In this study pollen quality and pollen production rate of some walnut types were determined. The pollen from nineteen walnut types that were selected during a selection study were used. “TTC” and “FDA” tests for pollen viability and “hanging drop” and “agar in petri dish” tests for pollen germination were used. Also, pollen production rate of walnut types were determined with its components and with pollen grains countings by the hemacytometric method.
The percentage of pollen viability in all walnut types were high (over 90%). Type 67 had the highest pollen germination rate with 52.82 %. The two germination tests gave similar results, however, the higher sucrose concentration (15 %) resulted in better germination percentages. The pollen production rate of the types were found to be higher than previous reports. We calculated that the total pollen production of a walnut tree could be as much as 50-100 billion in number.
