Abstract:
In the present paper the variability for nut characters of 127 trees growing in Nohradhar area of district Sirmour (30.33°N and 77.21°E) and Bharmaur area of district Chamba (32.68°N and 76.60°E) in Himachal Pradesh has been reported.
Among 47 trees which were selected for the present studies in Nohradhar, the nut weight varied between 4.85-16.59 g, nut width 23.13-36.95 mm, shell thickness 0.64-2.45 mm, kernel weight 1.02-6.91 g, kernel percentage 16.68-51.66, fat percentage 40.30-73.25 and protein 9.74-21.07 per cent.
In Bharmaur area the studies were carried out on 87 seedling trees in which nut weight varied between 6.24-23.61 g, nut width 25.13-36.81 mm, shell thickness 0.48-2.16 mm, kernel weight 2.61-8.02 g, kernel percentage 20.74-53.51, fat percentage 41.45-73.70 and protein 6.08-21.67 per cent.
Similar variations were also reported for other characters such as nut height, nut thickness, index of roundness, pad width, pad thickness, kernel width, kernel height, kernel thickness, nut shapes, shapes of nut base and nut apex, position of pad on suture, position of groove along pad, adherence of two halves, ease in kernel removal, structure of shell surface and intensity of brown colour on kernel in both the locations.
