Abstract:
Rational breeding of walnut (Juglans regia L.) started in Hungary in the 1950s. This work began under Prof. Dr. Péter Szentiványi’s leadership who studied the Carpathian race first of all. Our breeder did the landscape selection. The achievement of this work was 3 registered cultivars (‘Alsószentiváni 117’, 'Milotai 10', ‘Tiszacsécsi 83’).
The landscape selection was succeeded by cross breeding in the 1970s. Prof. Dr. Szentiványi used as a for “father” the in the USA bred ‘Pedro’ cultivar that has good genetic characteristics like “lateral bearing” and bright colour of kernel. (Szentiványi, 2000) More important breeding aims of our work were: late leafing out time, bigger ratio of the most “lateral bearing”. Among the hybrids of ‘Milotai 10’ and ‘Alsószentiváni 117’ we selected 5 to apply for registration. In 2003 the National Institute for Agricultural Quality Control registred 3 (‘Milotai kései’ (former hybrid number Milotai 10-9), ‘Milotai bőtermő’ (former hybrid number Milotai 10-14), ‘Alsószentiváni kései’ (former hybrid number Alsószentiváni 117-31) hybrids from our candidates on the National List.
