Abstract:
Since 1989, 1,215 seedling trees from different populations of domestic walnut were analysed 'in situ'. In the three successive years, the data of pheno-phases, sensitivity to bacterial blight and antracnosis, parameters of vegetative activity, and pomological traits were collected. The main selection criteria were: late leafing, intermediate and lateral bearing potential, resistance to walnut blight, and nut quality. 24 genotypes from different regions in Slovenia were preselected. During the period 1994-99 they were grafted and planted in one location in Maribor (NE Slovenia) The most perspective are late leafing genotypes ‘Z-62’, ‘Krnc’ and ‘Z-60’, which leaf out at the beginning of May, and ‘Z-59’, ‘Erjavec’, ‘Z-61’ and ‘NH-5/3’, with leafing time between 25th and 30th of April. The majority of genotypes exhibit semi-erect to semi-spreading growth habit. The exceptions are 'Z-62' with markedly erect habit and ‘Č-6/7’ with spreading branches. ‘Remšak’ has the most vigorous growth with dense and branched canopy. Lateral bearing potential is well expressed in ‘Erjavec’ which has very regular and the highest yield. Crop is also very stable in ‘Z-59’ which has intermediate bearing habit. None of the genotypes is extremely sensitive to bacterial blight neither to antracnosis. The kernel colour in ‘Z-59’, ‘Erjavec’ and ‘Z-60’ is much brighter than in the others. For the inshell market, the most appropriate is ‘Pukšič’ with round nuts, bright and very smooth shells. The field evaluation of the preselected trees will be finished in the next two to seven years. One or two of the trees are expected to be realized as new Slovene varieties.
