Abstract:
In 2002-2003, the most promising pear selections obtained from a breeding programme developed by the Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura, Sezione di Forlì (ISF-FO) were screened for their reactivity to fire blight.
Tests were performed in the greenhouse of the Regional Phytosanitary Service (RPS, Bologna) by inoculating actively growing shoots of pear scions in pots with a local, virulent strain of Erwinia amylovora. Disease incidence (% blighted shoots) and severity (% blighted shoot length) were used as the measure of pear susceptibility, and 5 selections were statistically less susceptible than ‘Harrow Sweet’ (resistant control).
