ISHS Acta Horticulturae 704: X International Workshop on Fireblight

THE ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY OF CROATIAN ISOLATES OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA

Authors:   E. Dermic, B. Cvjetkovic, D. Dermic
Keywords:   fire blight, apple, pear, streptomycin, mitomycin
Abstract:
Samples of the different plant species resembling fire blight symptoms were collected in eastern Croatia from 1998 until 2001. Erwinia amylovora, the bacterium that causes fire blight, was extracted from the samples. After purification, bacterial isolates were identified as E. amylovora by conventional laboratory methods, including ELISA test and by PCR. The sensitivity of Croatian isolates of E. amylovora to various antibiotics was tested by plating a suspension of overnight cultures on media containing different antibiotics. All tested isolates were sensitive to all the antibiotics used, including streptomycin. This was expected, since no antibiotics are allowed in plant disease control in Croatia.
