Abstract:
The SME Bio-Protect GmbH is developing biocontrol products for fire blight.
One recent formulation BPMC 2023 consists of 3 yeast strains.
We found that application of the formulation at the recommended 1.3% concentration applied 24-48 h prior to pathogen arrival at the stigma resulted in significant growth reductions of 3 log cfu.
Yeast efficacy was influenced by apple cultivar with the best performance on ‘Florina’ and ‘Maigold’ and least on ‘Iduna’ and ‘Pink Lady’, but when tested on 7 cultivars significant protection was provided on all.
Yeast strains Metschnikowia pulcherrima MSK1 and Aureobasidium pullulans CF10 and CF40 exhibited antibiosis that was dependent on media composition; MSK1 displayed greater antibiosis across more media than the other strains.
