Abstract:
Fire blight affects a number of popular ornamental and native forest species in Switzerland. The incidence and spread of disease on these hosts increases annually. The common occurrence of the alternate hosts Cotoneaster dammeri and Crataegus monogyna makes understanding fire blight epidemiology on these species critical to developing science-based policy for orchard protection and ecosystem preservation. We monitored the early progression of disease outbreak from over-wintering cankers in C. dammeri and indigenous C. monogyna. We found that cankers facilitate further infection of spring growth and serve as inoculum reservoirs. We found that outbreak progression was predictable using the MaryBlyt™ disease model, demonstrating the potential benefit of exploiting models to limit chronic outbreaks in non-Malus/Pyrus species.
