Abstract:
The program to obtain a genetic improvement of the apricot began in 1964 at the Research Breeding Station (RBS) Veselé at Piešťany. This program has been carried out according to several objectives: resistance to frost, late blooming, high quality, regular yields, early and late ripening, processing suitability, flesh firmness, resistance to diseases. The main cultivars utilised as parent in the program were European and Central Asian cultivars. Among 10 000 seedlings obtained by cross-pollination, 250 were selected in the last time in station trials as advanced selections. Up to date 10 apricot cultivars have been registrated: 'Vesna', 'Vegama, 'Veharda', 'Velbora', 'Vesprima', 'Barbora', 'Vestar', 'Veselka', 'Vemina' and 'Velita'. A new program was engaged in 1996 to improve the resistance to diseases (Monilinia ssp., PPV, Gnomonia sp. ).
