50 YEARS OF APRICOT VARIETIES BREEDING IN ROMANIA

Author:   V. Cociu
Keywords:   Prunus armeniaca, selection traits, agronomic behaviour
Abstract:
In 1951, I started the breeding works concerning the apricot cultivars, within the Agronomic Research Institute in Bucharest and I have continued this activity until now, covering more steps, with the main objective which had to be activated. As a result of this long period of activity with the team I led, I managed to modernize the whole apricot assortment in Romania. Among the 29 cultivars which now are officially propagated, 21 are Romanian cultivars, 6 are from the foreign origin and only 2 are from the old Rumania germplasm (‘Umberto’ and ‘Best of Hungary’).
