Abstract:
Nine apricot hybrids have been selected in Greece, for their resistance to plum pox virus, their fruit quality and other desirable characteristics, among 4000 created. They have been developed by controlled hybridizations of the local high quality cv Bebecou with the North American origin cvs: ‘Stark Early Orange’, ‘Stella’, ‘NJA2’, ‘Veecot’, ‘Sunglo’ and ‘Harlayne’, recognized to be resistant to PPV. The inheritance of resistance to the disease by the hybrids has been tested for at least eight vegetative periods in conditions of high inoculum pressure in the field and by artificial inoculations, followed by indexing onto GF-305 and by ELISA tests. The blooming time of the nine promising selections is from mid to late March. Their time of ripening extends from late May to the beginning of July. The fruit size, taste and texture are satisfactory. The selections are self-compatible. Their fruits have been evaluated for their suitability for canning. The selections named: ‘Neraida’, ‘Niobe’, ‘Nastasia’, ‘Nina’ and ‘Nereis’ are destined for fresh consumption, while the selections named: ‘Nausika’, ‘Nomia’, ‘Nostos’ and ‘Nefele’ are suitable both for fresh consumption and canning. These new promising selections are destined to support the local apricot culture in the areas where they will be adapted.
