EVALUATION OF END OF DORMANCY IN SEVERAL APRICOT CULTIVARS ACCORDING TO DIFFERENT METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES |

| Abstract:
We compared three biological tests: flower bud fresh and dry weight increase and development of phenological stages, in order to determine end of dormancy in 17 Italian and foreign varieties. In general, the first appreciable and reliable sign of the end of endo-dormancy is a rapid-onset and sustained increase in flower bud fresh weight, usually a more than 25-30% increase compared to pre-forcing weight. The increase may occur earlier or later depending on chilling requirements in the given variety. This allows different cultivars to be classified on the basis of heat requirements as revealed by their response to the forcing test in heated chambers. No substantial differences in the weight increase trend were observed between bud fresh and dry weight. Methodological choice of the former was due to the more simplified and lower cost operations involved. | |
