Abstract:
To examine the effects of fertilization technique and cultivars on the uniformity of cabbage growth, four cabbage cultivars were transplanted to the experimental field. The experimental treatment design was as follows. After quick-acting fertilizer of N at 0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha-1 had been incorporated for simulating field fertility into the experimental field, slow-release fertilizer at 150 kg N ha-1 was applied into the bed. The application methods of the slow-release fertilizer were whole layer application (fertilizers were incorporated into the bed), and stripe application (fertilizers were injected just under the seedling-placement lines). Coefficients of variation of head weight for cvs. ‘Irodori’, ‘YR shibuki’ and ‘Matsunami’ were lower with stripe application than with whole layer application, respectively. Coefficient of variation of head weight for cv. ‘Kogetsu’ showed no difference between the two application methods. As for cvs. ‘Irodori’, ‘YR shibuki’ and ‘Matsunami’, the lower fertility level led to the lower heads weight with both application methods. But with the whole layer application method, head weight decrease due to fertility shortage was greater than with the stripe application method. On the other hand, the head weights of cv. ‘Kogetsu’ showed no significant difference between the stripe application method and the whole layer application method at the same fertility level. In conclusion, stripe application of slow-release fertilizer in cabbage cultivation was more effective for improving growth uniformity regardless of the fertility level in the field. However, there were differences for the effect of stripe application among cultivars.
