ISHS Acta Horticulturae 70: Technical and Physical Aspects of Energy Saving in Greenhouses

BLINDING GLASSHOUSE COMPARTMENTS WITH PLASTIC FILM

Author:   D. Bokhorst
Abstract:
At the Glasshouse Crops Research and Experiment Station some experiments with blinding glasshouse compartments during the night with a clear polyethylene blind, were carried out. Four compartments of about 190 m2 were used, one of which served as a control and never was blinded. The first year the experiment was done with tomato, the second year with sweet pepper.

The temperatures in the blinded and not blinded compartments were kept at the same level. As the vertical temperature gradients were not the same in the blinded and not blinded compartments, one cannot state that the plant temperatures were everywhere the same in the different compartments.

Direct measurements of the energyconsumption turned out to be a failure, so it is difficult to tell what the total energy savings were.

Harmful effects on the crop could not be observed.
