ISHS Acta Horticulturae 7: Symposium on the Techniques of Experimentation in Greenhouses

LYSIMETERS AND WEIGHABLE CONTAINERS IN GREENHOUSE EXPERIMENTATION

Author:   J.P. Hudson
Abstract:
A critical assessment is made of the pros and cons of using lysimeters for assessing evaporation rates in glasshouses, with special reference to the advantages of internal drainage systems and the need for taking account of the drainage lag of each lysimeter. A comparison of the effectiveness and suitability of various types of weighable containers, compared with lysimeters, leads to conclusions regarding the need for maintaining strict water-regimes in greenhouse experimentation, in view of the apparently critical relation between soil water deficits and optimal yields of very high value crops.
