AN AGRIBUSINESS ASSESSMENT OF ´AMBON KUNING´ BANANA IN BANYUWANGI REGENCY, EAST JAVA

Authors:   Yuniarti, P. Santoso
Keywords:   production subsystem, marketing subsystem, processing subsystem, fresh banana, processed banana.
Abstract:
To assess the efficiency of the banana industry in East Java, an assessment of the production, marketing and processing subsystems for ‘Ambon Kuning’ banana was undertaken in Banyuwangi regency from June to December 2003. Results indicate that the performance of each subsystem was not optimal. The application of recommended technology in the production subsystem was very low and productivity was well below its potential. The marketing system for fresh and processed banana was inefficient and could be best described as an oligopoly. In the banana processing subsystem, product was produced to meet domestic and local market needs using simple technology. To increase efficiency, the management skills of the farmers, marketing agents and processors must be improved.
