ISHS Acta Horticulturae 699: I International Symposium on Improving the Performance of Supply Chains in the Transitional Economies

TOWARDS CUSTOMER-RESPONSIVE SUPPLY CHAINS FOR FRESH PRODUCE IN PNG: AN ASSESSMENT OF SUPERMARKET CUSTOMERS AND THEIR PREFERENCES

Authors:   J. Spriggs, N. Omot, J. Anjen
Abstract:
The National Government of Papua New Guinea is actively encouraging agricultural exports. In the long run agricultural exports are viewed as an important alternative source of export revenue as royalties from the mining sector begin to diminish. One category of agricultural production that is viewed as having good potential is fresh produce. Not only has this the potential to be an important generator of income from the national perspective, but also it can provide cash income for rural families in the PNG Highlands, which have very few alternatives. However, the PNG fresh produce sector is export-ready. The sector is unable to provide reliable supplies of consistent quality produce. Indeed, there is currently no effective quality control system in place. In order for the PNG fresh produce industry to effectively compete in the export market, it is essential to improve the functioning of the supply chain.
