ISHS Acta Horticulturae 698: VI International Symposium on Chemical and non-Chemical Soil and Substrate Disinfestation - SD2004

INTEGRATED APPROACHES FOR SOIL DISINFESTATION

Authors:   M.L. Gullino, D. Spadaro , A. Garibaldi
Keywords:   fumigants, grafting, biocontrol agents, soil disinfestations, IPM
Abstract:
Many of the components of integrated pest management (IPM) can be adopted for the control of soilborne pathogens. Control measures including fumigants, fungicides, cultural practices, biocontrol agents and physical methods can be combined or used in alternation in order to achieve a satisfactory control of soilborne pathogens. There are many examples of good results obtained by combining methods of control for soil disinfestation. Numerous research trials have been carried out on combining chemical and physical methods (i.e. combining reduced dosages of fumigants with soil solarization or with the use of grafted plants). In the future, the introduction of biocontrol agents into cropping systems should be intensified. In all cases, the combination of different methods of control should be based on a good understanding of the mode of action of the control agents, when used alone and in combination.
