Abstract:
Studies on the damage potential and abundance of depredatory birds in the vineyard were conducted at Gaura in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh during fruiting season. Four different cultivars, Chardonnay, Ugni Blanc (White coloured), Cabernet and Pinot Noir (Red coloured) were in the vineyard. Birds like common myna Acridotheres tristis, jungle myna Acridotheres fuscus, brahminy myna Sturnus pagodarum, jungle crow Corvus macrorhynchos, house crow Corvus splendens, redbilled blue magpie Cissa erythrorhyncha, himalayan tree pie Dendrocitta formosae, whitecheeked bulbul Pycnonotus leucogenys and redvented bulbul Pycnonotus cafer were found feeding on grapes and damage was more in the periphery of the vineyard. Eco-friendly methods have been tried to reduce the birds’ damage. It was observed that net provided better protection in comparison to reflective ribbons. Application of Bio Bird Repellent, a neem based product, have shown least effect for bird depredation.
