Abstract:
Most of the varieties are small, juicy and have poor shelf life. However, their capability to tolerate moisture and nutrient stress is inherent which makes them valuable gene sources for apple improvement programmes.
Fruit samples from 11 local apple varieties viz., Bong, Karkichoo, Khara, Mar, Mongol, Phamer, Sanker, Shinz, Squirmo, Tha and Yangm were collected in the month of September.
A considerable variation in the physico-chemical properties has been recorded.
These varieties are affected by codling moth (Cydia pomonella) which is not prevalent in other apple growing parts of India.
The need of hour is to develop suitable vegetative method of propagation for conservation of these genotypes and their inclusion in the apple breeding programme.
