Keywords:   apple, flowering, fruit characters
Abstract:
A preliminary study on 15 apple cultivars revealed a wide range of variability in time and duration of flowering. Pink bud stage was earliest in Scarlet Gala (29th March) and late in Tydeman’s Early Worcestor and Rymer (5th April). Similar pattern was observed with the appearance of first flower, while the flowering duration ranged between 12 days (Royal Delicious) to 18 days (Golden Delicious). The maximum fruit size, weight, specific gravity and firmness were recorded in cvs. Royal Delicious (6.81 cm X 6.70 cm), Scarlet Gala (174 g), Scarlet Gala (0.97 g/ml) and Buckingham (9.63 k.g/cm2), while the minimum values were measured in Early Shanburry (4.13 cm x 5.23 cm), Early Shanburry (80.05 g), Chaubattia Anupam (0.53 g/ml) and Early Shanburry (3.34 kg/cm2), respectively. The highest volume and core ratio of fruit were registered as Royal Delicious (200.33 cc) and Scarlet Gala (2.20), in comparison to their minimum values as Early Shanburry (85.00 cc) and Rymer (0.60), respectively.
