GROWTH, FLOWERING AND CROPPING RESPONSE OF FLEMISH BEAUTY PEAR TO BLOOM SPRAY OF GIBBERELLIC ACID AND BENZYL ADENINE

Abstract:
Studies were conducted on bearing trees of Flemish Beauty pear (Pyrus communis L.) raised on seedling rootstock, at 6 x 6m spacing. On these trees uniform limbs were selected prior to bloom, which were given different treatments of GA3 and BA either alone or in various combinations at full bloom stage. GA3 alone at 10, 20 or 30 ppm or in different combinations with BA increased shoot elongation, internodal length and average leaf area. Increased return bloom was observed consistently with the application of BA at 10 or 15 ppm. In contrast, application of GA3 alone decreased return bloom. In the present study, application of BA alone or in combination with GA3 considerably increased fruit set, fruit retention and yield efficiency. GA3 applied at 20 or 30 ppm though increased fruit set but decreased fruit retention. Application of GA3 + BA in different combinations, BA alone at 15 ppm in 2001 and GA3 at 10 ppm in 2002 produced longer fruits than control. Fruit length/diameter ratio increased with the application of GA3 alone or in combination with BA. Combined application of GA3 + BA significantly, increased fruit weight, GA3 when applied alone decreased number of seeds per fruit.
