ISHS Acta Horticulturae 696: VII International Symposium on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics - Part Two

RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTS ON METAXENIA IN APPLE

Authors:   R. Kumar, R.L. Sharma, K. Kumar
Keywords:   apple, pollinizer, effect of pollen parent, fruit quality
Abstract:
Three apple cultivars Tydeman’s Early, Stark Spur Golden Delicious and Golden Spur Delicious were tested as pollinizers for three scab resistant cultivars Co-op 12, Redfree and Liberty. Effect of pollen parents on fruit and seed set and their influence on physical and chemical characteristics of the fruits were studied. Tydeman’s Early proved to be the best pollinizer in Co-op 12 and Liberty causing maximum fruit set of 36 and 34%; 45 and 38%, respectively in comparison to other pollinizers in the two seasons. For Redfree the pollinizing cultivars Stark Spur Golden Delicious recorded maximum fruit set of 45 and 35% during both the seasons. Pollinizing variety Golden Spur Delicious resulted into fruits that had more seed per fruit (7 in number) during both the seasons in Co-op 12. Maximum fruit weight in Co-op 12 (107.2, 85.7 g), Redfree (127.6, 106.8 g) and Liberty (122.2, 123.3 g) was obtained with pollinizing Cultivar Golden Spur Delicious, Tydeman’s Early and Stark Spur Golden Delicious, respectively in both the seasons. Golden Spur Delicious resulted in largest (190, 126 ml) fruits in Co-op 12 while Liberty produced the largest (198, 149 ml) fruits when pollinated with Stark Spur Golden Delicious. Chemical characters like acidity and total sugars were found to increase or decrease with the choice of the pollen parents.
