EFFECT OF NURSERY RAISING TECHNIQUES ON LATERAL ROOT DEVELOPMENT OF WALNUT SEEDLINGS

Authors:   G. Singh, D.R. Gautam
Keywords:   walnut, nursery production, rooting, seedling survival
Abstract:
The effect of five nursery raising techniques : seedlings raised in polythene bags and transplanted after germination by chopping the tap root, transplanting of young germinating seedlings from nursery beds; raising of seedlings by restriction of root system by placing polythene sheet at 20 cm depth; under cutting of one year old and newly germinating seedlings was studied on lateral root development vegetative growth of walnut seedlings. All these nursery raising techniques improved the development of lateral roots over the control (seedlings grown in usual nursery beds). The number of lateral roots were maximum (21.80) in seedlings in which undercutting was done at germinating time. The parameters of vegetative growth of seedling height (53.03 cm), diameter (11.74 mm) and dry weight (18.85 g) were also recorded higher in this treatment. The per cent transplanting survival was improved in all the nursery raising techniques, however, the maximum (84.06%) survival of transplanted seedlings was also recorded in the treatment in which under cutting was practised at germinating time.
