Abstract:
Out of the total population of walnut growing in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
Ten superior strains were selected.
Majority of the selected strains had vigorous trees with sparse branching and terminal bearing habit.
The age of the trees varied from 16 to 188 years and nut yield per tree from 13.11 to 110.30 kg.
Nut weight varied from 9.55 to 18.33 g, length from 3.13 to 4.76 cm, diameter (at suture) from 3.14 to 3.77 cm, (at cheek) 3.18 to 4.08 cm, shell thickness from 1.11 mm to 2.33 mm.
Kernel weight varied from 4.33 to 10.33 g, length from 2.58 to 3.65 cm, breadth from 2.23 to 3.05 cm and width from 1.82 to 2.66 cm.
Kernel percentage varied from 43.69 to 66.20. Kernel fat and protein contents ranged from 52.31 to 57.83 and 16.09 to 18.70 per cent, respectively.
