Abstract:
In order to isolate antibacterial substances from the rhizome of Z. mioga, methanol extracts were separated according to their activity against Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. Three antibacterial substances were isolated and purified by column chromatography and recrystallisation.
On the basis of spectrometric studies including 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, 1H-1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC and IR, Compounds I (CI), Compound II (CII) and Compound III (CIII) were identified as (E)-8 (17)-epoxylabd-12-ene-15, 16-dial (C20H30O3, MW=318), galanolactone (C20H30O3, MW=318) and galanal A (C20H30O3, MW=318), respectively.
CI and CIII showed activity against all three bacteria and CII exhibited activity against B. subtilis and B. cereus but not S. aureus. CI was examined for its antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis, B. cereus and S. aureus by optical density using Bioscreen C. CI showed strong growth inhibition at 10 ppm against B. subtilis and B. cereus for 72hrs, and at 25 ppm against S. aureus. These results are the first reports on the isolation of (E)-8 (17)-epoxylabd-12-ene-15, 16-dial, galanolactone and galanal A from the rhizome of Z. mioga.
