Abstract:
Crop diversification is a major concern for agricultural research in the Canary Islands.
The litchi is of increasing interest to consumers and given its market potential, it is one of the alternatives to the traditional monocultural banana crop.
Studies have been carried out over the last eight years on some aspects of litchi cultivation (propagation, phenology, cultivar characterization and evaluation, and pest and disease incidence). Of the results to date, the most notable are the potential of grafting versus air layering and the commercial promise shown by the cultivars Early Large Red and Tai So.
The main phytosanitary problem encountered is thrips, of particular virulence in Fay Zee Siu and some related cultivars.
