Abstract:
Cryphonectria parasitica caused serious damage to chestnut throughout the world in the last century.
We investigated chestnut populations near Uzhgorod (Ukraine) in 2001 and near Baia Mare (Romania) in 2002 and 2003. It was found that the disease seriously infected the chestnut trees in these areas.
The number of infected, killed and recovering trees was recorded and the ratio of infected trees was also calculated.
Bark samples were collected for laboratory investigations.
One vc-type (EU-12) was detected in Romania and two vc-types (EU-12, EU-13) in Ukraine.
All of the collected isolates were virulent, while no hypovirulent strain has been identified from these Ukrainian and Romanian regions so far.
Conversion tests were carried out and the results showed that one Hungarian hypovirulent strain (PJ-2) was able to convert the virulent isolates.
Hypovirulent strains could be a potential biological control agent to protect the chestnut and other trees against C. parasitica.
