Abstract:
Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr was reported in Portugal in 1989, and since then the pathogen has affected many chestnut stands.
First extensive surveys and assessment of vegetative compatible (vc) types had showed few vc types and frequently only a type per site.
The purpose of this study was to monitor the natural spread of the pathogen and the influence of the traditional agricultural practices on disease dispersal.
This study was carried out in Valpaço, one of the initial locations where chestnut blight was found.
Around the initial focus and from progressive distances all chestnut trees were checked.
The fungus was isolated from all diseased chestnut trees and the vc types were assessed.
Results showed the prevalence of the initial vc types and a decrease in chestnut blight incidence from the initial focus.
Grafting and pruning were also associated with disease dispersal.
