GENETIC POLYMORPHISM OF ROSA GENOTYPES NATIVE TO HUNGARY

Abstract:
Complex patterns of genetic variation in the Hungarian species of the genus Rosa hamper a straightforward taxonomical interpretation of morphological characters. As an alternative, we examined genetic variation based on AFLP markers. Using four primer combinations, we obtained 327 polymorphic loci in 47 rose genotypes from Hungary and the Carpathian Basin. With these markers, genetic constitution and origin of several often debated taxa could be clarified. In general, the main groups of the AFLP dendrogram agree with the commonly recognized major sections of the genus. As previously concluded based on morphological characters, our results suggest that interspecific hybridisation has been of great importance in the evolution and speciation within the genus Rosa.
