Abstract:
We have studied the antioxidant enzyme activities of extracts of rose hips from different Rose taxa (Rosa canina and R. dumalis) found at an altitude of 1900 m in the Erzurum region of Turkey. Catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein levels were determined. Statistically significant differences were seen between species in terms of the above mentioned parameters. CAT, GPx and GST levels were found to be the highest in the hips of R. dumalis at 109.1, 14.3, 0.60 (EU/mg protein) respectively. CAT, GPx and GST levels in R. canina were 42.1, 5.4 and 0.36 (EU/mg protein) respectively. Lipid peroxidation activity was found to be higher in the hips of R. canina at 5 nmol/mL of MDA compared to 4.4 (nmol/mL) of MDA for R. dumalis hips.
